At least 1,241 people have died in the ebola epidemic in the democratic republic of congo in what has become the second largest ebola outbreak ever recorded in history. the outbreak started last august, and a third of those who have fallen ill are children, a higher proportion than previous outbreaks, according to the united nations. despite an effective new vaccine, the number of new cases has continued to rise in recent weeks, in part due to attacks on medical centers and community mistrust, according to the un and the world health organization. efforts to combat the epidemic are being severely hampered by attacks on treatment centers and health workers by militia groups, suspicion of the national government which is managing eradication efforts, and mistrust of the disease – which many residents view as a conspiracy – and of international medical experts who are trying to get patients into treatment centers, according to the new york times. since january, there have been 130 attacks on health facilities, which caused four deaths and injured 38 people, according to the un. the outbreak has been contained in parts of ituri and north kivu provinces, but the un and who said the risk of spread to other provinces and neighboring countries remains very high. on friday, the un and who announced in a joint statement that they are strengthening efforts to contain the epidemic. the un has created a new emergency ebola response coordinator role and increased support for humanitarian coordination and preparedness and readiness planning. the who is implementing strategies to identify and treat people as quickly as possible, expanding vaccinations, and redoubling work to end transmission in health facilities. additional un measures will also be implemented to aid the work of non-governmental organizations and agencies already on the ground. An order of monks at grimbergen abbey in belgium, where the grimbergen beers were first brewed by monks, are starting to brew beer again after a 220 year hiatus. the monks recently delved into the abbey’s archives to find the original ingredients and brewing methods dating back to the 12th century, which were thought to be lost when the abbey was burned down by french revolutionaries in 1798. a new microbrewery will be built on the same spot as the original, and the monks will be combining the traditional methods with modern and innovative techniques, according to a statement. it expects to produce its first ales in late 2020, reuters reported 🇧🇪🍻 (📷: reuters, grimbergen, 📝: @kassy )

A doctor in ratodero, in sindh province, pakistan, has been arrested and is under investigation after at least 10 families accused him of infecting their children with h*v by reusing syringes. muzaffar ghangro, who has aids, has denied the charges, saying that he didn’t do anything intentionally, the guardian reported. in the past month, more than 600 people, most of them children between one month and 15 years old, have been diagnosed with h*v in the area in what has become an h*v epidemic. the recent outbreak is now also being linked to major failures in the health care system, according to npr. most doctors in the town are untrained and many practice folk medicine, and diseases are often spread through the reuse of syringes, piercings done with unsanitary equipment, and a lack of standards for blood transfusions, the bbc reported. sindh province accounts for half of the 150,000 hiv-positive cases in pakistan, according to unaids. Three women with visual impairments in colombia are using their enhanced sense of feel to help improve early b****t cancer detection in the country and are outperforming doctors at finding tissue alterations, according to the guardian. the women are specifically trained to use their fingertips to detect nodules – groupings of cells – which may be the first signs of the disease. they are part of the hands save lives project at cali, which uses a method that was made popular a decade ago by german doctor frank hoffman. hoffman said that visually impaired women can detect about 30% more tissue alterations than doctors, and those changes can be 50% smaller than those usually identified by medics, according to the guardian. the women are guided by five adhesive strips marked in braille, which allow them to report exact locations of lumps to doctors. more than 8,000 new cases of b****t cancer are diagnosed in colombia each year, according to official statistics, but experts say the death rate is rising because many new cases are diagnosed too late. Dutee chand, a 23-year-old indian sprinter, has become the first openly lgbt professional athlete in her country after she told local newspaper, the sunday express, that she is in a same-sex relationship with a woman from her village in eastern india. her announcement comes less than a year after india’s supreme court struck down a 157-year-old law that criminalized g*y sex. chand, a member of india’s national track and field team, is known for winning a lawsuit in 2015 against the international association of athletics federations for banning her from competing against other women because she has hyperandrogenism, a condition that naturally produces high testosterone levels. many saw the rule as an example of international sports organizations policing women for having “masculine” qualities, according to the new york times. chand was the first indian sprinter to reach a final at a global athletics event, the world youth championships in 2013, has competed at the 2016 rio olympics, and won two silver medals at the asian games in 2018, the bbc reported. “i have always believed that everyone should have the freedom to love. there is no greater emotion than love and it should not be denied,” chand said 🇮🇳🌈❤️ (📷: getty)

Nigel farage, a pro-brexit politician and the leader of the brexit party, was campaigning in the city of newcastle on monday for the european elections when a man hurled a milkshake at him. the 32-year-old, named paul crowther, said he had thrown the banana and salted caramel five guys milkshake that cost him £5.25 ($6.68) at farage to protest his “bile and racism.” this is the latest incident where right-wing candidates in the uk have been milkshaked, with protesters hurling the drinks on former english defense league leader tommy robinson and ukip european election candidate carl benjamin in recent weeks. crowther was detained at the scene, saying “i was quite looking forward to it, but i think it went on a better purpose.” he has since been charged with common assault and criminal damage. farage has blamed the attack on those wished to remain in the european union, tweeting after the attack, “sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible.” (📹: ap)

Greta bellamacina, a 28-year-old british director, said she was denied entry from cannes film festival, where her film “hurt by paradise” was screening, because she had turned up with her four-month-old son. bellamacina told the guardian that the festival initially refused her child entry to the site, but were eventually allowed into the accreditation area after “much stressful debate.” she said she was then told her stroller would have to be sent through a different entrance and that her child would require a delegate’s pass which costs around $335. she said she offered to pay the fee but then was told that it would take 48 hours to process her request and was asked to leave the site, according to the guardian. bellamacina’s film is about a young single mother trying to balance her life as a writer and was screening in the market section of the festival. cannes organizers said they are seeking more information about the incident. Taiwan’s parliament voted to pass a bill legalizing same-sex marriage on friday, almost two years after the country’s constitutional court ruled that the existing law, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman, was unconstitutional. this makes taiwan the first country in asia to legalize same-sex marriage. the decision was met with cheers by the tens of thousands of people who had gathered in the rain outside the parliamentary building in the capital, taipei. lawmakers had debated between three bills, passing the most progressive of the three, which was the only one to use the word “marriage” as opposed to “same-sex family relationships” or “same-sex unions.” the law will go into effect after taiwan’s president tsai ing-wen passes it into law, according to the bbc. “on may 17th, 2019 in #taiwan, #lovewon. we took a big step towards true equality, and made taiwan a better country,” tsai tweeted after the vote 🇹🇼🌈 (📷: getty, ap, reuters)

Hundreds of people in havana, cuba, held their own pride march on saturday after the government canceled the official march, which was going on its 12th year. more than 100 cubans took part in the unauthorized march before being stopped by dozens of security officials. at least three activists were arrested by plainclothes police, the new york times reported, while others were ordered to disperse. earlier in the week, the state-run center for s*x education said in a facebook post that the conga against homophobia had been canceled on orders from the ministry of health due to “new tensions in the international and regional context that directly and indirectly affect our country and have tangible and intangible impacts in the normal development of our daily life and the implementation of the policies of the cuban state.” the center called the alternative parade a “provocation.” tensions have risen between cuba and the united states since washington threw its support behind venezuela’s opposition leader, juan guaidó, and havana, a close ally of venezuela, maintained support for president nicolás maduro, according to the washington post. For the first time ever, ireland has invoked a 1999 immigration act, banning an american pastor accused of homophobic and anti-semitic hate speech from entering the country on the grounds of national security or public policy. ireland’s minister of justice and equality said on sunday that he had banned arizona-based pastor steven l. anderson, who was due to preach in dublin on may 26 “in the interests of public policy.” anderson announced in 2009 he hated us president barack obama and prayed for his death. he has called for the us government to exterminate all g*y people and praised the gunman who murdered 49 people in the mass shooting at the pulse g*y nightclub in orlando, florida, in 2016, according to the bbc. his faithful word baptist church has been labeled a hate group by the southern poverty law center and by the anti-defamation league, according to the new york times. this is the first time that the exclusion order has been invoked in ireland since it was created 20 years ago. Protests erupted on sunday in kashmir with thousands of people taking to the streets to demand justice for the alleged r**e of a three-year-old girl who was reportedly lured into a school bathroom by her neighbor, according to the ap. the girl was hospitalized in critical condition on may 8 but her condition has stabilized. officials say they have arrested the suspect in sumbal town and a fast-track investigation is under way. the suspect’s family had said he was 13 years old, but protesters are disputing the age as they believe the family produced a fake school-issued birth certificate to save him from a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. police are questioning the school principal who issued the birth certificate.
