“tiger eyes…when thinking about nepal one usually thinks about mt. everest, the himalayan mountain range, ancient buddhist temples, or jon krakauer’s novel “into thin air.” we rarely associate tigers with this rugged and adventurous ecotourism destination. however, nepal boast the fifth largest wild tiger population in the world -- up 69% since 2009 and holding the lowest poaching rate in the world at nearly zero percent -- making nepal an ideal destination for wild tiger lovers and photographers. these majestic cats are critically endangered with an estimated world population of only two thousand in the wild due to habitat loss, deforestation and human poachers. these animals deserve our protection. i am thankful that countries like nepal and india are leading the world’s conservation efforts when it comes to saving this majestic cat.” 📷 + caption by gregory piper (@gregpiperarts )

A mother polar bear must teach her young how to stalk their prey and then pounce when the time is right. it’s up to the young cubs, however, to learn how to swim on their own -- a lesson that usually takes place the first time the baby bears touch the water. #backtoschoolmondays 🍎

“the stoat normally blends into its white, snowy environment, where it hunts lemmings and mice and is very difficult to spot. however, when winter arrives late, or hot weather melts the snow, its snow camouflage turns into a white signal flag. this makes it vulnerable to birds of prey like eagles and falcons.” 📸 + caption by bernt østhus (@berntosthus )

“kilchurn castle is a hauntingly beautiful sight. it was built by the campbells in the 15th century on an island within loch awe. since then, the water level of the loch has changed and the castle is now accessible on foot via an exposed causeway. in 1760 it was badly damaged by lightning and was consequently abandoned. so violent was the storm, the remains of a turret tower still rest upside-down in the center of the courtyard.” 📸 + caption by siân addison (@sianaddison )

“it doesn’t happen often, so when you get a day at bow lake without any wind - it is pretty special. the drive up alberta highway 93 is full of spectacular views, bow lake being just one of the many spots to see.” 📸 + caption by stevin tuchiwsky (@stevint )

“the oriental dwarf kingfisher is one of the most beautiful kingfishers found in the western ghats region of india. these kingfishers hunt for the appropriately sized food source based on the age of their chicks. when the chicks are very young, the parent birds will hunt for small lizards, cockroaches, spiders and other small insects. when the chicks grow older, these kingfishers will catch much larger lizards that almost match their own height and weight.” 📸 + caption by pratik humnabadkar (@pratikhumnabadkar )

“these insect-eating, nocturnal birds are very difficult to spot because of the way they blend into their habitat. the indian scops owl will roost for years in a tree trunk like the one pictured here. this naturally carved, heart-shaped roosting site made it an especially unique setting, worthy of being captured and cherished.” 🦉🦉.” 📸 + caption by sarosh lodhi (@saroshngp )

“elephants are highly social and intelligent animals. summer is the perfect time for the calves to learn something new from their own personal teacher, their mom. on a hot afternoon, we watched this mother elephant teach her young how to swim in the water.” 📸 + caption by yashas narayan (@yashasnarayan.photography ) for #backtoschoolmondays 🍎

“the arctic fox. the only native mammal in iceland. these adorable creatures are well adapted to the coldest climates on our planet. actually, these foxes are the only canid whose foot pads are covered in fur; because of this, they are able to roam outside at temperatures of -60/70c. their lifespan is relatively short - about three to four years - which makes it even more important to leave them space to breed and to protect them from being hunted.” 📸 + caption by ben simon rehn (@bensimonrehn )

“lassen volcanic national park is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes. jagged peaks tell the story of its eruptive past while hot water continues to shape the land. lassen volcanic offers opportunities to discover the wonder and mysteries of volcanoes and hot water for visitors willing to explore the undiscovered.”
