It’s been such an interesting few days. i can’t quite put my finger on what’s going on with me and i won’t try, because i kind of enjoy not knowing. my entire young adulthood (my twenties), i was what some might call a control freak. i always had to know how everything was going to turn out. i felt uncomfortable in unknown situations. fast forward a few years later & the many talks we get in grad school about uncertainty & how important it is to be comfortable with it in our work as therapists...and i feel like a new person. and in many ways, the skills from the therapy room, often translate into my daily life. i find myself noticing things about people that others might not. it is both a curse & a gift to get to a level of self-awareness that spills into a heightened state of awareness of the world. and when i notice things nowadays, i refrain from labeling them. i welcome dialectics & refrain from thinking of things in terms of mutual exclusivity. things just are or might be...and that is the interesting part about life...we never quite know what will bring our way...every day has the potential to surprise us. and out of all the things that have managed to surprise me in life, i believe that love has done it in the most violent of ways. it strikes completely out of the blue. i often visualize it as being in a boxing ring & a jab comes your way, then before you could realize what is going on & make sense of how to strike back in the most effective way, an uppercut blows your brains out and leaves you unconscious. i realize my metaphors might be a little hard to digest at times, but really...think about it...if you have truly been infatuated w/ someone...haven’t you felt like you were in & out of consciousness at times? that future this poem talks about...that fantasy...that illusion of what could happen is a lot more powerful than anything that will actually happen.
