I’m so thankful that @tin_house sent me this copy of girls write now: two decades of true stories from young female voices 💕we need to listen to women, girls, and non-binary folks every day, but i think all of us need this especially today. i’ll be carrying it with me and reading these bite-size notes from young bad a*s females. i’ve said it before, but i’ll say it again, i have the best job in the universe. i get the privilege to work with and for young teens, and they’re doing amazing things. i hope when they speak, someone is always listening. .

Slow weekend mornings are truly the jam. i realized i finished educated recently and never really talked about it on here. my brain is too tired from the work week to write the review this book deserves right now, but man, read it. all the stars from me. wish i could read it for the first time again. .

📚here’s my library stack 📚
.
i’ve had how to find love in a bookshop for a few weeks now and was about to send it back to the library unread. a few of you messaged me that it was an adorable and cozy read and that i should definitely come back to it. i was able to renew it one more time and keep it a bit longer 🙌
.
i started next year in havana on audio and wanted to read along with the library book. so far, it’s great!
.
the girl who smiled beads is an amazing true story of the authors experience fleeing rwanda and becoming a refugee in the us as a young girl.
.
i hope i’m able to read all these before they’re due! anyone else get stressed out about trying to read all your library books before you have to send them back?!

|@sipsby #partner| things that help me combat the sunday scaries: 1) my newly organized wall-mounted shelves. 2) listening to @whatshouldireadnext and adding books to my wishlist. 3) trying out a new @sipsby tea while reading...or, in today’s case, grading. today i’m sipping chai from @chicochai and i think it may be the best chai latte i’ve ever had. how are you spending your sunday?? #shelfie #booksandtea #englishteacher #bookstagram #fallreads #weekendreads #bibliophile #fictionmatters

After a few sneak peeks of spring, melbourne has reverted back to some very wintery weather ❄️☃️ it’s a good excuse to snuggle up & read! i recently finished ikigai by hector garcia & francesc miralles & thought it was a really interesting book 📖👌🏼 ikigai is a japanese concept that means “a reason for being.” it’s a place of fulfilment where your needs, desires, ambitions & satisfaction meet.

i love this concept & enjoyed reading more about japanese culture, where “retirement” isn’t in their vocabulary & a sense of community is one of their contributing factors to happiness & longevity. it also covers a great chapter on resilience. definitely recommend this one! 💙

According to both 2006 and 2009studies, those who read fiction are capable of the most empathy and “theory of mind,” which is the ability to hold opinions, beliefs and interests apart from their own.
they can entertain other ideas, without rejecting them and still retain their own. while this is supposed to be an innate trait in all humans, it requires varying levels of social experiences to bring into fruition and probably the reason your last partner was such a narcissist.

“everything worthwhile in life is won through surmounting the associated negative experience. any attempt to escape the negative, to avoid it or quash it or silence it, only backfires. the avoidance of suffering is a form of suffering. the avoidance of struggle is a struggle. the denial of failure is a failure. hiding what is shameful is itself a form of shame.
pain is an inextricable thread in the fabric of life, and to tear it out is not only impossible, but destructive: attempting to tear it out unravels everything else with it. to try to avoid pain is to give too many f***s about pain. in contrast, if you’re able to not give a f**k about the pain, you become unstoppable.”
.
.
“the desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. and, paradoxically, the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience.”

no #socksunday today because i’ve not been feeling well. warm tea is my favorite whenever my coughing fits occur during these cold/ sinus seasons occurs. i’ve been trying to do some reading but it’s been a bit difficult with the way i’m feeling. having a bad cough and sinus infection doesn’t help a #bookworm with their reading that’s for sure.
📚
i’ve been currently reading this weekend two books. and am hoping to finish them soon.
.
i’m re-reading frankenstein by mary shelley for my read-along #frankenstein200read with @cher_cat70. and also for the #itsalivereadalong with @jobis89. i’m loving this re-read! i’ve had to read this a few times for college classes and always dreading the long essays at the end. now i can read this and actually enjoy it! also looking forward to tcm channels special 200th anniversary documentary tomorrow.
.
also i’m reading a new to me author, alan bradley. my first mystery book that i’m actually kind of liking. 17% into the sweetness at the bottom of the pie and it’s going pretty nicely. death already and an 11 year old playing at being a sherlock detective.
“heaven must be a place where the library is open twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week.”

Oh my god, this book! lizet, daughter of cuban immigrants, has gotten herself into an elite liberal arts college where she is struggling a bit with the academics and even more so with the unfamiliar culture. meanwhile, at home in miami, her community is buzzing with the arrival of a young cuban boy whose mother died trying to bring him to this country. i'm about halfway through and it is beautiful and heartbreaking and hard to put down! #currentlyreading #makeyourhomeamongstrangers #jenninecapócrucet #readwomen #latinxwriters #stmartinspress #miami #bookstagram #weekendreads

Some new short fiction up on my blog (link in bio). today being municipal elections day in victoria i thought sharing this piece might be appropriate. it's part of a series of writing that retell dreams as film scenes. this one is a bit on the nose, but it reflects some of my current worries and preoccupations.

Chilly october day on the beach! i am halfway through frankenstein, and i’m wondering why i haven’t picked this up earlier. i am already seeing themes of morality, nature, and prejudice. if you have read this, what themes did you pick up on? -

while i haven’t read frankenstein prior to this week, i have always been in awe of the fact that mary shelley wrote this story at such a young age. eighteen years old! frankenstein was published in 1818, and it is still read and discussed to this day. it is truly amazing what young, women writers can do. -

Happy sunday, friends! taking a quick break from doing laundry and cleaning up the apartment to enjoy a latte and read a little bit of harry potter.
also, somehow i missed my 3 year #bookstagram anniversary yesterday! in 2015 i had been sharing the occasional book photo on my personal account, and naturally when i noticed people had instagram accounts completely dedicated to books i knew i needed one too. so on october 20, 2015 i posted to this account for the first time! ❤️ whether you’ve followed me since the beginning or more recently, thank you!! i love being a part of this community and am constantly inspired by all of you.

Feminists don’t wear pink & other lies, scarlett curtis & various others. .

feminist and feminism, words that have long been considered angry, controversial and even dirty. i have always considered myself a feminist and yet i have found my own personal feminism at sometimes, a difficult road to walk down. .

this collection of essays and poetry explore what feminism means to the women who have wrote for it. this is not just a book for women and neither is it as daunting as many have long considered feminism to be. .

this was a truly enlightening read, powerful, brilliant. . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 .

Just finished “inspired” by @rachelheldevans. i savored this book -- and i mean savored. i read it strategically over the span of two months because i didn't want to skip over any of evans' wisdom.
as a book-loving, english-teaching, reading-obsessed christian, i appreciate how evans approached the bible as a book with various genres. when we can identify the genre of a story, we can better interpret it and apply it to our own lives. evans applies this model of interpretation to the bible in a way that is enlightening, progressive, and restorative.
if you're a progressive christian like myself and you struggle sometimes with the conservative misappropriation (yup, i said it) of the bible, then this is the book for you. or, frankly, even if you're not a christian, but you want to learn more about how the bible was written and why certain things make sense in the context of the biblical era, you might appreciate this book too.
i will certainly re-visit my highlights and marginalia and re-read this book over and over again.
