Today is day 5 of the #unreadshelfproject2018 challenge and i chose great expectations for this one.
one of my goals is by 2019 to have read all of charles dickens works...which...is slowly coming along. i remember reading this one when i was a kid, but it was one of those heavily edited children's classics editions where not many bad things or death was ever discovered so i do need to reread this. i feel like i'm saying this a lot but again i kinda want to wait for this one till fall.
i don't remember much, but i remember there's some crazy lady with a wedding dress and an orphan so there's that.
have you read this? or any dickens? if so what's your favorite one?
mine right now is tale of two cities, absolutely loved that one.

#qotd : do you ever test the trustworthiness of a person?

#aotd : i have never done that but then when the trust is broken once it is never regained for me
.
.
so the question comes from my current read and so does this quote. it's the closing line in the story titled scheherazade on the shore.

the protagonist tests every guy she is starting to date, by telling him a tale. if the guy stays through the telling, apparently he can be trusted.
this made me wonder, do we really test people before trusting - is that even possible?

would love to hear your thoughts on the same in the comments. .

As i took this picture tears of joy (a lot of them!!) were running down my face. 🤗🤗 my sweet little daughter is back from the summer at her dad’s.
💕
.

of course my #currentread had to make a cameo in this happy airplane shot. since you have to meet children flying unaccompanied at the gate, i had to get there early to get my gate pass and go through security. so i got some good reading time in while i waited. so far it’s looking like it’s maybe a serial killer book and not just a one m****r mystery. 1881, edinburgh...right up my alley!! 🖤🖤
.
but for now all that i need is lots of snuggling with my daughter. 😊😊😊

Day 5 of 7 days of unread books is one i’m actually reading now! one summer by bill bryson is an almost unbelievable tale of one summer in america, when lindbergh flew over the atlantic, b**e ruth hit home runs, and prohibition ran wild. his detail-packed, narrative driven history is my favorite kind of nonfiction read.

also featured is my favorite bookmark from @bookartbookmarks and another great month of teas from @sipsby ! i’m especially excited about the lavender matcha by @3leaftea - green tea has become my afternoon drink of choice to get me through the last few hours alone with little kids.
what are you reading and drinking to get you through monday?

Happy monday everyone! today i plan on catching up on some more reading from last week and continuing on with the plum tree. i’m only 2 chapters in so far, but am looking forward to seeing where the story goes.
~
what are your reading plans for the week?

Just a few of the books from my tbr pile. a couple of these i’ve had for years (anna karenina and great apes) and the other 2 i’ve picked up much more recently. somehow the more recent picks usually seem to win when i pick what to read next but i’m trying to be a lot better about reading some of my older books this year.

The series i finished this month for #unreadshelfproject2018 july’s challenge. :) i only owned the first one, then got the others from the library. i enjoyed all four stories. kind of sad to see it end. but trying to decide what my next book will be. 📖👍🤗 #librariesareawesome #readingissexy #bookstagram #books2018jrg #unreadshelfproject2018

I like #bigbooks and i cannot lie.... for today’s #summerbookpicchallenge2018 i’ve chosen some of the really big books from my #unreadshelf most of these are actually #halfread and long abandoned. my plan this year is to return to them. the second photo shows the whole stack (including the ones that don’t fit today’s #blackandwhite theme such as my #currentread wolf hall - nearly finished!). @lindsays_books @katieladyreads

I started rereading this gem and now remember now why the count of monte cristo was my favorite book as a teen. the suspense, adventure and intrigue starts with a b**g in the first 50 pages. in this @barnesandnoble paperback edition, i learned that alexandre dumas' father was the biracial son of a french father and an african caribbean mother. that alexandre and his contemporaries, honore de balzac and victor hugo, wrote their epic works as a series of episodes that appeared in the french newspapers of the time. they were the celebrities whose stories sold papers, each weekly episode ending in a cliffhanger. they were the modern day tv series writers proving yet again my assertion that #authorsaremyrockstars.

i am enjoying this french historical fiction, it's hard to put down and i look forward to seeing how the tale unfolds...again. i remember loving the book but not what happens exactly. any books you want to re-read?

#qotd : do readathons or buddy reading help you read better or read more?

#aotd : well it was my first readathon and i read more than i have in last couple of books - even if most were small books, i was able to get on track with my reading - so that's a plus.
as for read-alongs, well i managed to read some books which i never would have, had i been reading them alone.
.
.
and so it's a wrap as the #nopressurereadathon #thefortnightreadathon hosted by @kolkatabookstagrammers and @gujjubookstagrammers comes to an end. i was able to read one additional book than my original planned tbr so i am happy.
here's a wrap-up rating and mini review of the books i read -

1⃣ some very dignified disclosures ⭐⭐⭐ narrative autobiographical fiction with very good character(s) development
2⃣ rumi ⭐⭐⭐ poetry that is meaningful
3⃣ amok ⭐⭐⭐⭐ captivating from start to end - a plot and human nature well handled for such a small book
4⃣ poonachi ⭐⭐⭐⭐ subtle yet brilliant in highlighting the issues of our societies today

also i did manage to read a quarter of the book sleeping beauties from my original tbr - i knew i wouldn't be finishing the book in 15 days but i succeeded in putting a dent, albeit a small one. the books is quiet intriguing and reads fast.

posts with detailed reviews will soon follow

🌟🌟🌟🌟
4 stars for this modern adaptation of antigone, a play written by the greek playwright sophocles.
though you dont have to know the play to appreciate the book, i did enjoy reading the wikipedia synopsis of the play after i finished the book and clearly saw the parallels. i think the author did a great job of giving such a contemporary and relatable twist to that ancient storyline.
coincidentally, i also started listening to a podcast called caliphate while reading this book, which follows a journalist's quest to understand isis, and that really added to the experience of reading this book.
it was long listed for the manbooker in 2017 and has won the women's prize for fiction in 2018 - so the writing style is a bit more "literary", but very readable nonetheless.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - american fire is a well written and extremely interesting look at a string of arsons in accomack county, virginia.
🔥
however, it’s much more than just a story about the fires. this book delves deep into the struggles of rural communities and just how far some people will go in the name of love. if you’re a fan of true crime, journalistic writing, and/or the first season of the #serialpodcast, this is one you should pick up.

1,776 pages later! this set of books (i’m not sure you can exactly call them a series) was challenging for me to read. particularly, end of watch. i’m working on a lengthy review of that book so i won’t delve too much into what made that read so difficult for me on a personal level. however, from a reader’s perspective? holly gibney makes these books unforgettable for me. i can think of very few realistically, relatably, and redeemably flawed characters in popular fiction. king includes her struggles with mental health (of which there are many) not as a token plot point but as “bells and whistles” or as a programmer like holly would say “a bug that becomes an unexpected feature”. namely, not as a sign of weakness or something to be stigmatized but as a character trait as basic as eye color or hair color. if you haven’t read these books yet - i highly recommend them for holly’s character alone. more thoughts on end of watch and the outsider to come. #stephenking #stephenkingbooks #constantreader #horror #mrmercedes #finderskeepers #endofwatch #billhodges #billhodgestrilogy #theoutsider #hollygibney #horrorreads #unreadshelfproject2018 #candle #crateshelf #bookstagram #bookdragon

Day 4 of the #unreadshelfproject2018 challenge.
this book i had been wanting for almost a year, just because of the cover which is gorgeous. then i found it on @bookoutlet for a mere $4 and immediately bought it. the best part? not only did it come looking absolutely brand new, it was also signed by the author.
i still haven't read this one yet but just the cover makes me think of long autumn nights and bonfires so maybe sometime this fall i'll get to it. (fingers crossed) 😊

Day 4 of 7 unread books - i picked this book up at a garage sale a few years ago, thinking it would be a great read for a mom of a boy (me). i think i probably saw it quoted or mentioned somewhere important, like the internet...however, i’m not sure i will keep this one. i have a hard time getting through parenting books, and i want to know if this is worth the effort.

so if you’ve read it, please let me know what you think!

The blue castle, by lm montgomery, 4.25/5⭐️ i read this a couple days ago after finishing 11/22/63. i was worried about feeling let down after finishing that amazing king novel, but this book was really good!
.
the blue castle is geared to an older audience than the anne or emily books. valancy is 29 and lives with her extremely oppressive mother; the setting is sometime before bobbing your hair became very popular, so before the 1920’s. constantly ridiculed for being an old maid, she has no faith in anything about herself. something happens that frees her to speak her mind and she embarks on a whole new life. 🔹
.
i really enjoyed this book. once again you see how lm montgomery appreciates a woman’s mind. the things valancy says to her stodgy family are hilarious! her blue castle is a place where she always escaped to in her dreams while living with her mom. but when it becomes a reality the reader is taken into a heavenly wilderness in canada. the nature descriptions are so detailed you can feel the wind b**w over your skin, or see the lake shimmering in the sun or mist. and, there are some cats in the blue castle. 😊montgomery always makes a point of showing how wonderful cats are; snuggling by the fireplace with valancy while she’s reading a book. perfection! 🔹
.
the antique behind my book is my mom’s, it’s an old cabbage slicer. seems like a large thing for cabbages! 🤷‍♀️
🔹
.
happy sunday everyone! tomorrow my daughter comes home. she’s been gone over a month and i can’t wait to see her!

#qotd : a quote from one book that seems fitting for a character or situation from another book?

#aotd : this quote from peter pan seemed perfectly fitting for roli, the protagonist from a book i recently read - #someverydignifieddisclosures, for she believes that a necklace she has is magical and she ends up doing something she would have otherwise never done.
.
.
the book was a review copy i received from the author, i have finished reading the book and it was interesting read in some ways. full review will be up soon on a post and in my blog.

in other news, today is the last day of #thefortnightreadathon hosted by @kolkatabookstagrammers and @gujjubookstagrammers and i did well. just need to finish one more book today and a wrap up post will be up tomorrow. .
