Instagram Public Photos with #shareblackstories

Meet 21-year-old photographer and director myles loftin (@mylesloftin ), an advocate for sharing stories of underrepresented communities and stories. “probably more often than not i would say that i felt like an outsider in spaces. and i guess maybe that’s why i’m so passionate about making sure that people feel seen, because i know what it feels like to not be seen and to not feel comfortable in a space,” says the parsons school of design student.⁣

“i #shareblackstories through my photography, making sure to highlight the black community as much as i can,” says myles. “also just through me existing. i am a black story walking.”⁣

this black history month, we’ve partnered with @bet to #shareblackstories and support #advocates doing amazing work on instagram and beyond. new episodes drop every tuesday in february. 🖤⁣

A racist prime minister, #justice4grenfell, prison reform, climate change and reparations: @santandave kept it 100 with his "black" performance @brits last night

then he went & picked up the album of the year award. more of this energy in 2020 right? (video's in two parts because the news edits all remove the "pm is a real racist" bit. please tag/share with someone who should see this)

Meet drag artist and performer shea couleé (@sheacoulee ), an advocate for lgbtq rights and body positivity. “i am a black, g*y drag queen who makes my living doing what i love,” says shea. “in my life, the biggest hurdle i've had to overcome has been to just love myself. you can’t be good to anybody if you’re not good to yourself first.”⁣

“it’s important for me to #shareblackstories because i don’t feel that positive black stories get shared enough! i feel like in 2020, celebrating my blackness is just being unapologetic in my blackness.”⁣

It's getting real out here! i must say, i am a lot more confident this pregnancy than the last. i can also attest that i am a lot more healthier. creating healthy habits before pregnancy really paid off. i mean, i'm less than 7 weeks away and my feet nor ankles are swollen. that wasn't the case for my jahshua's pregnancy.🙅🏽‍♀️
.
i'm in such a good space as far as pregnancy goes. just ready to meet my baby boy 💙 and have some good laughs along the way. 😂

I was invited by @instagram to attend their #shareblackstories ig masterclass at @agencyatl here are some things i learned:
.
.
✍🏾if you are a creator follow ig’s page @creators to keep up with cool ways to use ig’s tools.
.
.
✍🏾ig’s new privacy feature that will require you to approve being tagged in someone’s picture—is coming.
.
.
✍🏾old to me (maybe) new to you but want more followers? engagement over likes. you need to engage your followers in the comments. it’s not enough to stir up conversations, you have to engage.
.
.
✍🏾ig stories(and the use of stickers, gifs, polls, q&a’s, etc), video (long and short)—major! use them!
.
.
lots of cool ways to engage and grow community. nope, i can’t help you get verified. thanks again #instagram ♥️ 📷 @tpgent

✊🏽 on the twenty-first day of black history month, we show love to the visionary, spike lee.
✊🏽 actor, director, producer and writer, spike lee was born shelton jackson lee on march 20, 1957, in atlanta, georgia, and soon moved to brooklyn, new york. growing up in a relatively well-off african-american family, lee was making amateur films by age 20.
✊🏽 his first student film, last hustle in brooklyn, was completed when he was an undergraduate at morehouse college. lee went on to graduate from the new york university film school in 1982. his thesis film, joe's bed-stuy barbershop: we cut heads, won a student academy award.
✊🏽 lee became a director of promise with his first feature film, she's gotta have it, in 1986. the film was shot in two weeks and cost $175,000 to make, but grossed more than $7 million at the box office, making it one of the most profitable films created in 1986.
✊🏽 lee often takes a critical look at race relations, political issues, and urban crime and violence. his 1989 film, do the right thing, examined all of the above and was nominated for an academy award for best original screenplay. subsequent films, including malcolm x, mo' better blues, summer of sam, and she hate me, continued to explore social and political issues. after two oscar nominations, the academy granted lee with an honorary award in 2016. last year, lee finally won for the film, “blackkklansman” and today, we continue to honor his creativity and artwork!✌🏽 #blackhistorymonth #shareblackstories

Malcolm x knew that standing up for what he believed might cost him his life. “in the northern streets, of which we have a great many, malcolm was a kind of hero. and when he talked to the people in the streets, he was the only person who was describing, making vivid, making a catalogue, of the actual situation of the american negro. and now he’s gone. we don’t know how. it’s a very sinister event, that’s all i can say. it’s terrifying.” - james baldwin #whokilledmalcolmx © bob henriques/magnum photos

Pearl primus ✨

a dancer, choreographer, and proselytizer for african dance, pearl primus (1919-1994) trained at the new dance group and worked with asadata dafora.

she began a life-long study of african and african-american material in the 1940s, and developed a repertory of dances emphasizing the rich variety of african diasporic traditions.

soon after her pillow debut in 1947, primus spent a year in africa documenting dances.

primus lectured widely and taught courses in anthropology and ethnic dance on many college campuses including the university of massachusetts in amherst.

she once said, “i dance not to entertain, but to help people to better understand each other.” 🗣

The top earners are the top learners. the more you learn the more you earn. wealthy people educate themselves. poor people entertain themselves. when i was living in china 🇨🇳 everybody wanted to party all the time. very few people like 3 of that wanted to actually grow! so we stayed home and educated ourselves to prepare to be ready when we had the opportunity back in the states. now we’re here and the plan is in motion. slowly but sure aly we’re earning more and learning more and in a few months we will be having different conversations about money and life. don’t believe just watch. surround yourself around more intelligent people than yourself. i want to be the dumbest person in the room. now i can soak up everything and be brainwashed by millionaires rather than thousandaires. stay extremely coachable. ————————
i’ve lit myself in position to change not just my life but other peoples lives. if you are truly interested to making more money than last year, being a better you than last year, helping more people than last year, reaching your goals no matter what they are, looking for like minded people to surround yourself with. let’s talk.

Black history month is in full bloom! @bostonpolefitness celebrates our black instructors throughout the year, but in february, we recognize and honor their contributions to the studio and the pole community. over the next 6 days we’ll feature our instructors by sharing their experiences and stories of being black in the pole world. ⁣

first up is our chunky dancer with a heart of gold, natalie @natalie_poles. you can catch her teaching intro to pole and pole 101 on saturdays!⁣

check out her story:⁣

i teach pole because i remember how much it s****d for me in the beginning. i was the only person in the room that looked like me physically and racially for a while. i felt neglected, unwelcome and was even told by my first few instructors, "well if you can’t do it, you can’t do it," as they walked away to help the students who didn’t need much help, if any. those words and actions made we want to quit a few times. thank goodness i didn't and eventually found an instructor that made me feel welcomed and made me believe i could achieve something, even if it was just walking around the pole gracefully. ⁣
•⁣
since i started teaching a year ago, it had been my mission in every one of my classes to have a positive vibe and make sure i talk, touch and support everyone in the room. i never want anyone to feel the way i did when i first started pole dancing. ⁣

along with having one on one interactions with everyone in my class, i also play music that will most likely resonate with poc. being afro latina, my music is important to me and ties me to my cultures and life. i also want people to see that they can dance to other music in pole, their music. besides how can you dance if you can’t feel the music in your soul!? ⁣
•⁣
my future dream for pole is for the entire institution to realize that it is very homogeneously white and sizeist and that they can do a lot more to make sure women and men of color and people of different sizes, feel welcomed, promoted and can take up space. i mean it was created by brown and black people.⁣

i hope everyone who tries pole falls in love with it like i did, and finds an amazing family and community like i did. thank you💛🌻😊

Black history month 2020⁣⁣
day #20: ruth miller⁣

ruth miller creates large narrative portraits and domestic scenes in vibrant hues. in her best-known work, teacup fishing—a nearly 5-foot-long, 3-foot-wide piece—a black woman’s skin looks touchable and lustrous, its surface layered in golds and pastels, shadows and undertones. she wears a wide-brimmed hat on top of loose hanging locks; a clean, worn-in blouse and skirt; and green sandals with her bare toenails visible. looking from a distance, the finely detailed work is stunning in its vitality, resembling a painted portrait. ⁣

miller lives and works in an unincorporated town on the gulf coast, but she was born and raised in manhattan. her mississippi-born mother taught her to sew, and two of her aunts taught her the basics of needlework.⁣

after graduating from the high school of music & art in harlem (which eventually merged with laguardia arts), miller discovered, while enrolled at cooper union, that the material reality of painting didn’t suit her. “the texture of turpentine [used to thin oils], the paints, it was all messy stuff,” she explained on a call from her home. instead, she took to the clean and quiet of textiles.⁣

in her embroideries, miller has drawn from the motifs of bakuba and adinkra textiles, which come from the democratic republic of congo and ghana, respectively. she has also found inspiration in the ukiyo-e style of japanese woodcuts, which were originally used to disseminate spiritual texts. despite its long history, and the time and skill that goes into it, embroidery has not always been as esteemed or revered as other art forms that are more readily associated with the creative impulse. but a wave of contemporary artists, including miller, have begun to change that.⁣

❤️art!!⁣

There is something special about the handwriting of ancestors. i don’t have much other than photographs from my paternal great grandmother as i never met her. i treasure this note that she signed. grandma moss was the caretaker of her eldest daughters child james taylor, throughout his adolescence, in addition to her other children.
on january 31st 1934 cousin james was sent home with a note from richmond public schools stating that he had damaged a textbook.
she was required to sign it and remit $.15 to pay for it and sign the paper. it reads “ida b. moss”
the howe third reader was published in 1909 so it was probably pretty worn!

considering that she had only learned to read and write in her teens, seeing her signature touches me. i also love that we also have the signature of the teacher r.m ransom as well. the penmanship was lovely then.
swipe to see an image of cousin james as a pre-teen. 🖤 ©️anderson family archive

As his journey in the public eye continued, a narrative emerged around martin & malcolm - critically divergent visions for black folks in the north and the south. thank you @instagram + @joyofodu for inviting me to be one of the select few black creators, creatives, and tastemakers you have decided to celebrate for contributing to the culture and beyond. the recognition and this space is incredible – had the chance to meet some dope new people and see familiar online faces. i get to be a black perfumer receiving love and energy alongside other innovators, talents, and visionaries.
i won’t be surprised if many of us in this room become recognizable names, faces, companies, influences in the years to come (many already are). let’s make it happen!
shameless plug: with that said, celadawn, the inaugural fragrance from matteo parfums (@matteoparfums ), is coming soon. celadawn is a sweet wood with a slight spiced-citrus profile, i hope you love it. you can read up on the brand + join the mailing list on our website (link in bio) to get notified about the launch, deals, and mp events. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here is a stack of books by black authors i own. in fact, sadly, these are nearly *all* the books by black authors i own. this is partly because although i have been reading more diverse the last few years, much of this reading has taken the form of library checkouts. still, i would like to own more books by black authors, as well. what in your opinion are some essential black reads everyone should have in their home library?

This black history month, i'm excited to partner with @delta to share one of my favorite black travel stories! #ad
my full name is gabby beckford. my father is jamaican and immigrated to the u.s. at age 12. my surname isn't extremely common, but i have run into beckfords in new york, toronto, london, and even dubai, and each one has been jamaican. (you may be familiar with my long lost uncle, tyson? 💁🏿‍♂️)

last year for my birthday my friend and i took an impromptu trip and ended up in the u.s. v****n islands for a long weekend. i knew virtually nothing about the territory except that americans didn't need a passport to visit so i expected it to be extremely tourist-centric. and it was. however, one of my followers from st. thomas offered to meet up and help us tap into its true afro-caribbean culture.

we ate oxtail, johnnycakes, and fungi so good i had to look around and make sure it wasn't my grandma back there cooking. we learned how being colonized more than 7 times had affected the island's population demographics, making it a multiracial melting p*t of caribbean islanders—so much so that i was assumed to be local multiple times!

however, the most shocking experience had to be when a waiter saw my receipt, recognized my last name, and told me he was friends with a few beckfords. i was floored. what are the odds?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
looking back it all seems extremely... fated.

to board a random flight, on a random day, to a random destination, and find so much home.

my birthday gift from the universe was knowing that no matter where i go, a piece of home will never be far. whether it's in a similar physical feature, a nostalgic food, or a literal stray beckford wandering around like i am. and that when i travel and learn about other black cultures, i am inevitably learning more about myself.

with the diaspora, the world is home because—as the jamaican national motto goes—'𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲' ❤️
