Protests have taken place in ireland after the underwear a teenager was wearing was cited in the trial of a man accused of raping her. in the course of the trial, the defense lawyer held up a pair of the 17-year-old’s underwear in court, and asked: “you have to look at the way she was dressed. she was wearing a thong with a lace front.” a 27-year-old man was found not guilty of raping the teenager earlier this month. the lawyer’s comments provoked immediate criticism, and women gathered at demonstrations across ireland to protest the handling of the court case on wednesday. their anger built on an online movement around #thisisnotconsent after the trial, kickstarted by the campaign group i believe her. “simply put, clothing is not consent. this kind of victim blaming is archaic and had no place in our court system,” susan dillon, who was among a group of women who started the hashtag, told buzzfeed news (📷: getty, lilthumper408, samana1988, maireos, catalanaalor via twitter)

Caroline mwatha, a kenyan activist who documented extrajudicial killings in nairobi’s dandora estate, has been found dead after six days missing. mwatha was last seen going into her home on wednesday afternoon by a friend, and her body was found at the city mortuary on tuesday. officials said in a statement that mwatha died after a botched abortion at an illegal clinic and detained six suspects. however, mwatha’s family have disputed the claim, accusing the police of using abortion as a coverup and are calling for their own independent autopsy, according to local media reports. several activists gathered outside the city mortuary on wednesday to demand justice as they believe that mwatha’s disappearance was linked to her work. A 17-year-old teen named khadija from oulad ayad, morocco, says she was kidnapped by a group of men in june and held for two months, when they r***d and tortured her, covering her body with tattoos that included a swastika, a n***d woman and the name of one of the men. the men returned her to her family on aug. 17 on the condition they don’t go to the police. khadija decided to go to the police anyway and made the case public. although some have accused khadija of lying, her story caused outrage in morocco. people demanded those responsible be brought to justice by using the hashtags #jesuiskhadija and #justicepourkhadija. police have since arrested 12 men over the allegations. the men made their first court appearance on thursday (📷: getty)

Photo by @andreabruce / @noorimages | as the us is toughening its deportation policies on migrants, we are focusing this week on the reasons why the migrants are fleeing their homes. andrea bruce uncovered stories of women in guatemala - the country with one of the highest rates of violence and insecurity in the world, scoping from a mixture of gang violence, political and paramilitary violence to domestic violence. women are particularly affected by extreme forms of s****l violence and femicide.
