Fruit fly quarantine:

as you may have noticed lately at the sunday farmers’ market in sacramento, our display looks a bit different this year. due to a recent discovery of the presence of the oriental fruit fly in the area, a quarantine has been placed on all open displays of produce, and all soft-bodied fruits with seeds on the inside (including tomatoes, peppers, melons, squash, etc.) must be covered with netting or plastic.
this netting is a requirement put in place by the california department of food and agriculture at all markets in the quarantine area, in order to prevent the spread of the fruit fly back to our respective farms.
while it is a bit of a burden and the displays may not be quite as pretty, all of us farmers are still providing the same fantastic produce as always. with these preventive measures in place, we do hope to have this particularly invasive fruit fly eradicated by springtime.
most all farms at the sunday market are affected by the new requirements, and we welcome any and all questions or concerns you may have about the issue, since it is vital to the preservation of fruit and vegetable crops in california. i’ll talk your ear off if you have the time!
we encourage you to join us at the market, and your support means a lot to all the local farmers as we face this challenge together. - jay cuff

October on the farm update

we welcome fall on the farm this month, as we enjoy the crisp, cooler air of october. this is my favorite time of year, with an abundance of winter squash, the final harvests of summer vegetables like tomatoes and peppers, and the re-emergence of all the hearty root vegetables that sustain us through the cold days to come.
autumn is the time for soil regeneration, and this month we cut and turn in all the residue from summer crops, make sure we get our organic cover crop seed spread over the majority of the farm, and wait with great anticipation for some much-needed rainfall after the long, hot summer.
early this month we also saw some special visitors on the farm, as my parents ventured down from oregon. of course we put them right to work on the farm, and ending the day with a home-cooked meal featuring oktoberfest sausage from mt. angel, oregon, made for a wonderful experience.
my passion for farming comes directly from my parents, who took me along with them into the berry patches and onion fields of the willamette valley in my early years. their support and encouragement has meant the world to me in establishing my own farm here in california. i love them dearly, and it was great to have them with me on the farm again.
we hope you’ll have a happy halloween this month, and as always, come and join us at the farmers market as we celebrate the bounty of the harvest season.
