Just another day in the peruvian amazon. tag a friend!
explorer @phil_torres says, jungle eye patch. this is the hercules beetle, aka the coolest darn beetle in the amazon. that giant horn is used to battle other males, and is a great example of what is known as runaway s****l selection. it is a feature that isn't useful for survival but is useful for ensuring mating, and has gotten outrageously big over millions of years.

La última comunidad inca del perú . - q’eros |
andes | peru |

after our little adventure in jericoacoara we drove to parque nacional lençois maranhenses. the largest sand dunes field of south america.⠀
•⠀
at first it looks like a desert, but it’s not. it lies just outside the amazon basin, has 80km’s of coastline and has a rain season. the rain is collected in the valleys of these white dunes, which then form stunning green, blue and black fresh water lagoons.⠀
•⠀
we came during early rain season, which means most of the lagoons had little or no water. nevertheless, the scenery is idyllic!⠀

#buenosdiasvenezuela.

he tropezado y me han levantado, he tocado fondo y hasta aquí he llegado.
esto lo dije hace un tiempo, pero siento que algo hizo click en mi y fue gracias a muchos de ustedes. gracias por estar, por ser y compartir.

The day after we enjoyed the carneval i had some more relaxed plans: i wanted to go to the beach 🏖 so i started in the noon after having breakfast, it wasn‘t a long ride with the collectivo to the centre of arica, and from there i walked about 15 minutes. the weather was great, sun was shining but as it was a little bit breezy it was‘t very hot anyway.
when i arrived at the beach i was not really impressed because it looked like most of the tourist beaches in italy or spain for example. (that‘s the reason why i don‘t post a picture of it).
nevertheless, i quickly put my things off and went first into the water. after that i chilled on the beach while reading a book 📚
i don‘t know how long i rested there but suddenly i began to feel that my skin was burning... so i went back, but on my way i explored the cliffs which were much more beautiful than the beach 😍

After five days in santiago i flew to arica, the northernmost city of chile. i already booked my flight a few weeks ago, but how exactly i wanted to travel from there step by step to the south i didn‘t know yet...
i arrived in arica in the early evening, and then took a taxi to my accommodation. fortunately i could stay with a friend of my grandmother, who moved from belgium to chile in 2014.
well, after i arrived there, i went to bed really early.
the next day we had breakfast, whole grain bread with a special chocolate cream made by a tiny factory in arica 😋
after that, we wanted to visit the annual carneval of arica. i was very excited!
we got there by collectivo, which is like a shared taxi. the city was full of people, who wanted to see the groups, who performed their dances in fancy costumes to keep the cultural wealth of the region alive.
you can see them on the pictures!
the atmosphere was great, the visitors cheered on the dancers, and especially the children were happy about every new group that came through the crowd.

comment 1 star 24 January 2019

So, as i told you, i planed to visit the museo de la bellas artes as well on this day. it wasn‘t far from the park, otherwise it wouldn‘t have been possible, because it was already about 4 pm in the afternoon.
there were many people sitting in groups on the stairs in front of the museum. i walked in and saw that the building was almost empty. matias a few days ago told me that the entrance is free, so i expected more visitors 😅
there were a few „copies“ of famous art pieces like the david by michelangelo, which weren‘t that impressive. i liked the architecture of the museum much more. the roof was mainly made of glass, so it was very bright in the main hall. besides the details on the walls were pretty as well, especially on the first floor.

Some details 💛
i enjoyed valparaíso, but at about 8 pm i decided to go back to the bus station, because i didn‘t know when the last bus to santiago leaves. as i walked to whole day, i got really tired on my way to the hostel. when i arrived there i just wanted to chill for a while and go to bed early 😴

The colourful factory 🌈

comment 3 star 28 August 2018

At the end of the street, which you can see on the last photo i posted, by following the white ants on the ground, i found the little candy factory „la dulcería“ (their logo was an ant!😄). it was just one room in which they produce the candy and sell it at the same time.

comment 4 star 27 August 2018

I think it is impossible to walk through these streets without a smile on your face. 💁🏻‍♀️🕉

comment 2 star 35 August 2018

comment 4 star 38 August 2018

The next day i stood up early and took breakfast on the terrace of my hostel. i planned to explore valparaíso, so i asked the man from the reception what is the best way to get there.
then i packed my stuff and walked to the metro station. i bought a ticket and drove to the bus station. the man from the hostel told me that there are leaving many busses to valparaíso and that the one and a half hour trip is really cheap. and he was right - i paid 3000 chilean pesos (about 4€!) for my ticket.
the bus was very comfortable, and i saw different landscapes while we drove on the empty country road.
when we arrived at the bus station in valparaíso, i searched for the fastest way to get to the center on the map on a flyer which the man from the hostel gave me. i expected to see the pretty little houses in every colour and also the street art which are typical for that city, but i became disappointed! first i walked on a fish market with unbelievably many flies, it was awful! after that, i just saw old and broken houses.
so i decided to eat lunch in the „melbourne café“ and then try it again. it was a great idea, because with new strength and optimism i found the beautiful quarters of valparaíso!😍

comment 3 star 52 August 2018

I spent about one and a half hour at cerro san cristóbal till i decided to return to santiago. therefor i took the funicular! as i told you, it was very hot, and so i wasn‘t the only person who wanted to take the easy way down 😅 but that was no problem, i didn‘t have to wait for a long time.
the funicular drove much faster than i thought, and it was fun. there is also a small zoo on one side of the hill and on our way, we could see a few animals for free😜
back to the city of santiago, it was only about 5 pm, so i decided to discover the „patio bellavista“, the quarter in which i was living. it was crazy how many restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs they have. i think they want to attract more and more tourists.
before i travelled to chile, i read about the café „emporio la rosa“. they produce unique ice cream flavours like rose water, earl grey or chocolate combined with chilli. i also found out that the woman in their logo is the mother elena of the foundress which i think is pretty cool. in order to taste the ice cream, i went there in the evening. i chose rose water and chocolate with orange, ate it in the park, and i loved it!❤️

comment 4 star 33 August 2018

The other side of cerro san cristóbal... 😍 i loved the palm trees and the flowers, and the view of santiago at the same time. it was amazing to sit there after the hike and just look at the nature and the city and to feel a refreshing breeze.

comment 5 star 65 August 2018

After one day, when my luggage has arrived at the hostel, i was ready for my first trip. in the center of santiago there is a hill called „cerro san cristóbal“, and i decided to climb it to see the 22-meter statue of the blessed v****n mary at the top (which you can see on the photo) and also the great view of santiago. as it was really hot on this day i bought something to drink and to eat before i started.
to walk up there wasn‘t hard, despite the heat, and i was at the top within an hour.
it was beautiful on cerro san cristóbal! the weather was great, the gigantic statue and the sound of church music were absolutely impressive!

comment 2 star 57 August 2018

In the days before i flew to chile, i was very excited. i wasn‘t that sure anymore whether it was a good idea to travel alone in a foreign country, but there was no way back (fortunately!) 😅
on sunday the 21 january my family came with me to the airport of stuttgart. we drank coffee, and then said goodbye to eachother.
during the flight i slept a few hours which was really fine. when we had to stop over in buenos aires i talked to matias, a chilean boy, who flew home from his travel through europe. i was very glad that i met him, because when we arrived in santiago, i waited and waited for my luggage - without success! matias helped me with talking to the staff (in spanish) and finding out what happened: my backpack got lost when we stopped over in amsterdam. they told me that they‘ll bring it to my hostel on the next day. nevertheless, i was unhappy that this happened to me on my first travel alone.
as the airport of santiago is far away from the center, matias and i shared an uber. after we said goodbye matias continued to his home, and i went to my hostel. it was great to arrive there and rest for a while!

My siblings and me at the airport. but let me tell you the whole story... my name is lisa, i am 19 years old and i come from germany. after i finished school last year, i wanted to travel for a while. at the beginning, i didn‘t know where my adventure should take place, i thought about africa or the us. but then, a friend of my mother told me that she can really recommend south america. for that reason, i began to do research about these amazing countries, especially about their cultures and their landscapes. and after i saw pictures of mountains, the desert, forests, the sea, lakes and rivers, but also of the cities like santiago and valparaíso and the small villages for example in the middle of the desert, which looked so lovely, i knew i want to travel to chile.
i booked my flight in november, and from then on, i organized the necessary things, for example a credit card and a travel insurance. and of course, which was much more fun, i bought the equipment like a backpack, clothes for hiking and a lot of various little, but not less important stuff.
my flight to santiago de chile started on 21 january.
