📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸 🇨🇳 hong kong views have inspired sci-fi classics blade runner and the dark knight (image 1). victoria peak (552m, it's 5⁰c cooler than the city), is the highest point on hong kong island and offers superlative views of the city (images 4, 5). three ways to reach the peak are hiking through aberdeen's forests, via asia’s oldest funicular, the peak tram (image 3) or by the 15 bus from central. at the top is an observatory (image 2). alternatively, hong kong’s highest observation deck, sky 100 (sky100.com.hk), is suspended 390m above terra firma, on the 100th floor of the territory’s tallest building, the international commerce centre (icc, image 6) in west kowloon, offering a 360⁰ view covering hong kong island and almost all of kowloon peninsula. 18 floors higher on the icc is ozone, ritz carlton’s bar.
a good book to read in the bar is days and nights of love and war (días y noches de amor y de guerra,1978) by exiled uruguayan writer eduardo galeano. it chronicles two decades of struggle and perseverance in latin america, with the 1976 argentine coup d'état as its focal point. galeano reveals episodes of his early life such as surviving malaria, loss of faith in god, threats of military coups, dictators and censorship, as well as his experiences living amongst indians, guerrillas, presidents and prostitutes. he defends his compatriots as well as brazilian street children and embattled indigenous mexicans.

📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸 horse racing in hong kong is a major part of the hong kong economy. started by the british when they first came to hong kong in 1841 and has become since then, a sport for the masses and a favourite pastime. chinese love gambling; the turnover of the jockey club in 2016/7 was hk$216.5 billion - i.e. an estimate of 1000 gbp per person per year.
the hong kong jockey club, one of the oldest hong kong institutions founded to promote and administer horse racing and other betting entertainment, is hong kong's biggest taxpayer as well as one of the city's largest charity donors. it recently refurbished the old city police station and gaol as a museum.
happy valley is a world-class state-of-the-art racing course in the centre of hk.
back in 1846, happy valley was swamp land, but the only flat surface in hong kong island, through the years, the city has built around the happy valley race course, and it is now surrounded by skyscrapers. the other site is at sha tin.
the 5 star peninsula hotel opened in 1928 picks up guests in a rolls royce and is sited near victoria harbour next to the old railway station, offering waterside views of kowloon . interiors include ornate cornicing.

📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸 🇨🇳 that obscure object of desire (cet obscur objet du désir ) was a 1977 french-spanish comedy-drama film directed by luis buñuel, based on the 1898 based on the 1898 novel the woman and the puppet by pierre louÿs.
in hong kong we have discovered no less than 4 shops selling #leica cameras and lenses, including a 3 lens leica, a rare anniversary hermes editions of the m6 with leicavit and a gold plated leica r6. similarly you can see the new nikon 58mm f/0.95 noct - nikon's answer to #leica 50mm f/0.95 and 75mm f/1.25 noctilux. equally, as in the film, hong kong is a polyglot society where people's of all races mix at work ....and play.

📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸 the battle of hong kong (8–25 december 1941), also known as the defence of hong kong and the fall of hong kong, was one of the first battles of the pacific war in world war ii. on the same morning as the attack on pearl harbor, forces of the empire of japan attacked the british crown colony of hong kong. the attack was in violation of international law as japan had not declared war against the british empire. the hong kong garrison consisted of british, indian and canadian units besides chinese soldiers and conscripts from both within and outside hong kong. within a week the defenders abandoned the mainland and less than two weeks later, with their position on the island untenable, the colony had raised the white flag of surrender on christmas day 1941. 🇯🇵🇨🇳 🇯🇵today, hong kong embraces japanese work ethics and culture. 78 years later, multinational dancers, dressed as japanese, entertain residents at a night at the happy valley racetrack, surrounded by wealthy skyscrapers.

📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸 🇨🇳 hong kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with an overall density of some 6,300 people per square kilometre. at the same time, hong kong has one of the world's lowest birth rates—1.11 per woman of child-bearing age as of 2012, far below the replacement rate of 2.1. it is estimated that 26.8% of the population will be aged 65 or more in 2033, up from 12.1% in 2005. hong kong recorded 8.2 births per 1,000 people in 2005–2010. according to the 2016 by-census, 92% of the hong kong population is ethnic chinese and 8% are other ethnic groups, including a large number of filipinoand indonesian foreign domestic helpers, making up approximately 4% of the population. 🐎🐎🐎🐎
it was first built in 1845 to provide horse racing for the british people in hong kong. the area was previously swampland, but the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on hong kong island. to make way for the racecourse, hong kong government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area. the first race ran in december 1846. over the years, horse racing became more and more popular among the chinese residents.

📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸 🇨🇳 chinese tourists from more than 100 cities went to more than 1,000 destinations in about 100 countries and regions. they have a love for western brands, including cultural and folk - here harry potter, the boy wizard creation of j k rowling. trips from female tourists accounted for 56 per cent of the total outbound trips during the holiday, 42 per cent from families and 30 per cent from couples.

bicester village, an outlet shopping area near oxford in the united kingdom, the dotonbori commercial area in osaka, japan, and australia’s sydney airport were cited as the top three locations for chinese consumers to pay using their phones.
the number of transactions using alipay at these three locations jumped 90-fold, 70-fold and 55-fold respectively, which helped outbound per capita spending to surge 30 per cent year-on-year.

when new harry potter books were still coming out, chinese publishers did a brisk business in fake harry potter books. who can forget “harry potter and the hiking dragon,” “harry potter and the chinese empire,” or “harry potter and the big funnel”? these books sold millions of copies. china’s enforcement of copyright infringement has now improved – in large part because large chinese companies like baidu and alibaba and tencent now control the rights to a great deal of content and their business models are based on people not getting such content for free

21 years ago, on the 1st july 1997, the last british governed, chris patten, handed over power of hong kong to china in the exhibition centre shown in image 1 ( view from the water). high resolution image is on www.aumphotos.com. a declaration was made under which the former colony’s way of life was to remain “unchanged” for 50 years after 1997.

the following images show how life in hk remains vibrant and fun. hong kong views have inspired the sci-fi classics blade runner and the dark knight. the stock exchange is booming and foreign banks continue to ply their trade profitably.

Jewels in the house: colourful and brightly coloured, hand-carved folding table from sikkim. it's eye catching colours and pattern make for an excellent conversation starter. it's usually the hero in our house decor but lately been wandering around for it's perfect fit. .
we love picking up art local to the region, especially when we travel within the country. the sheer joy of living in a 'multi-everything' (cultural, ethnicity, languages, religion, region, food, craft, vegetation and the list goes on) country. .

british missionaries saw schools in chek chue (modern-day town of stanley), shek pai wan, heung kong tsai (modern-day aberdeen) and wong nai chong on hong kong island, when they arrived in 1843. li ying college was established in 1075 in present-day new territories. wealthy chinese sent their children to canton. in 1862, the first government school, queen's college (then government central school) was set up, with stewart serving as the first headmaster.

the chinese name for taxi used in hong kong, dik si(的士), is a cantonese transliteration of the english word "taxi". the earliest pioneer of the modern taxi service may have been wu zung (胡忠). in 1941, he is believed to have owned 40 taxis, including 10 white cards, which he leased to the government. when the japanese occupation of hong kong began in december of the same year, he suspended his transport operation. he resumed his business after the war with 100 cars.
prior to 1974, taxi liveries were chosen by licensees, with a proliferation of colours and mingling with private vehicles. on 13 september 1974, the government gazetted standard colours – silver for the upper half and red for the lower half – for all taxicabs in hong kong to w**d out illegal taxis. from 1976 onwards, "ordinary" (red) taxis would be allowed to continue to operate in the new territories as well as kowloon and hong kong island, while new territories taxis – silver for the upper half and green for the lower would be forbidden from venturing into urban areas. a batch of 20 blue taxis serving lantau island started operating in 1983.
the majority of hk taxis (toyota coronas) are owned by 17 independent taxi companies that rent out taxis on a shift basis to 40,000 self-employed drivers.
as of 2017, there were 18,163 taxis in hong kong, of which 15,250 were urban taxis, 2,838 were new territories taxis, and 75 were lantau taxis. every day they serve about 1.1 million, 207,900 and 1,400 people respectively.
