Mariama bâ was a senegalese writer and activist. she was born in 1929 in a well-to do family, her father being minister for health under the french colonial administration. however, after the death of her mother she was raised by her grandparents in a more traditional way and struggled to pursue her education. she was educated both in french and koranic schools and later became a teacher. she taught from 1947 to 1959.

Mariama bâ was married three times, and was left to care of her 9 children by herself after her last divorce, she only turned to political activism once her children were grown up. she promoted the education of women and was active in local women’s associations. living in post-colonial senegal, she was aware that both senegalese and french culture were patriarchal in different ways and she was trying to understand what that meant for senegalese women. .

Mariama bâ published her first book ’so long a letter in 1981’. the book sheds light on the gender inequalities resulting from a strong enforcement of tradition, and received the norma prize. her posthumous novel, ‘a scarlet song’ shows the difficulties of interracial marriages when there is a lack of openness on both sides. mariama bâ died in 1981 from cancer. a mariama bâ boarding school for girls was opened by leopold sedar senghor. .

- there is something known as, 'a young man' -

leave all those boys that never become men.

the ones that think growing is lame,
and young means stupid,
the ones that want freedom,
but avoid every form of responsibility,
the ones that live for instant gratification,
and bond together in misery,
sex, noise, and drugs, to avoid themselves,
the ones that are malicious,
towards their mates who became men

some men sometimes, do what the boys do.

they do not do it, to look like men
(the are men),
they do not think their masculinity lies on those things,
they know when it becomes a problem,
they know when they are sliding away
they know life led to it - not clueless peers,
they will not raise their sons to be like them. - enyinnaya

Personal growth
you should never have to look back at your life a year ago and feel the same.
now yes physically, financially, emotionally, we could have been held back but no one has that power over our mental except we've handed it over.
and once one has that mental liberation, nothing can stop the other part of your life from following suit.
it is a necessity that we invest deeply in ourselves.. learning from each day we encounter..

- thoughts and conversations -

resting and being happy matters more.

i never really cared about so much money.
weird for a person who has long had, a healthy relationship with hunger. i have tried several times, to understand the relationship between greed and lack.

to me, it is really interesting, to see how some of our truest desires, do not reflect our needs. there is always what we want, what we need, and what we end up pursuing. like when you want a relationship; because you need love; but end up pursuing lust.

the idea of more work (stress) and unhealthy sleeping habits, have been grossly romanticised. much more by people who have comparatively more at their disposal.
it could often get really noisy, and yet alluring; because it makes you feel like you are after something ultimately gratifying. you know, maybe to at least, to live like the people, who make the loudest sounds about it.

could it be that, we are all just addicted to the chase?

i do not think so. i believe that, sometimes we are reminded of what we truly need. it may be buried in the distractions we have entertained over time, but it does really exist. sometimes we find it difficult to understand it; other times, we become very uncomfortable (or even guilty), of been drawn to our true self, because it makes us feel so different from others.

perhaps this difficulty, lies on our understanding, of what people percieve us to be. we struggle to obtain things, that are of value to them, and not us; so we can shine, to them, and for them; and earn their attention and respect, accordingly.

i'd love to think that anyone faced with the difficulty, of finding his/her truest desires, should focus more on redefining what satisfaction means to them; rather than questioning the essence of hard work and riches. by this way, you just might suddenly find a balance. maybe only your peace of mind will be assured in the course of the journey, yet still, it will all be worth it. - enyinnaya
