Pass the night in peace
by paul oluwafemi
bore holes into nights and see how
much w***e darkness can be when
stripped n***d through journeys.
nights are nothing when you’re holding
a lantern of fire to pass it by with peace.
knights go broken through nights to stream
tears on their faces at dawn.
pass the nights in peace without any shattered
dream made bald with balms of darkness.
dawn will be easy with all your lazy moves, with all
your lazy grooves thinking like a paramecium.
pass the night in peace and leave your broken
pieces with the sun, leave your broken pieces
with the furnance of dna and allow fire to
forge out the blueprint of life sleeping inside your darkness.
nights are roads leading to the ends of paths,
they’re bridges varnishing like a mirage into the
woods of darkness thickened together like
colloids devoid of squids.
peace comes after your broken pieces have been
made to see the speck of light on the head
of clouds where victories play in unison
as stars.
pass the night with peace and allow tranquility
to sttle without any guilty conscience that
shoul’ve punished logic and reason.
roads cannot be straightened in the dusk
of cowardice with swollen dices.
bridges wait on the ridges of gully erosion for judges
to speak the language of freedom for the
innocent to pass on to the beauty of dawn.
pass the night in peace, with pieces without
any gout and shingles singing disease to release an album inside your body of glory.
pass the night with peace and take your
glory with a story hanging on the ivory
towers of power.

African writers, you’ve brought our story and translated our fights in the most relatable way, you’ve emptied your heart on paper so that our stories are told and we never forget to stand.
you’ve taught changed and we’ve learned, learned enough to see that africa is the most diverse and creative continent, from the grassroots. we hardly wake up to orange skies and trees, our book covers don’t have to be the same.

Human beings need other human beings to survive and thrive. when we are still babies, our needs are obvious; we need adults to clean us, feed us, soothe us, comfort us, and love us. when we become adults, our needs may not be as obvious but we need others to notice us, appreciate us, encourage us, inspire us, cheer us on, or just simply acknowledge our existence.

knowing what you know now, will this change how you interact with other human beings?

Throwback
friday, november 25 2016.

the photo was captured while i prepped a witness, before my first ever court proceeding.

i was not comfortable with the fact that parts of my hair had grown a little more than i wanted.
my geeky hip hop self tried hard to adopt will smith & dj jazzy jeff's funky look of the early 90s.
there was just no time to visit the saloon, to make the style more obvious.

less than two hours of sleep only fuelled my anxiousness.
unusual day, that day; although some things were typically expected.

what i mean is.. no support system.
only a few good men, innocently working to make their light shine subtly (if possible), through a system designed to fail them.

as i wondered if the light could possibly blind or subdue the agents of this system, i thought, "now is the best time not to stop". now that they frustrate my efforts
now that they pride in betraying my trust
now that they punish those who sympathize with me
now that they openly call me crazy

naive. brave. s****d and weak.
lol s****d and weak?
strong and clever.

okay, i might not have been half this thorough in my thoughts, but certainly, a combination of these inspired my actions.

i sincerely thank god for that day. i thank god for who i am becoming, and those i might have truly inspired (if there are any). thank you lord. - enyinnaya. a
